Book Review: The Light Keeper by Cole Moreton *gifted

Hello and Welcome Back! It’s been a while since I’ve shared a book review on my blog. It is finally time for another one! Cole Moreton is an award winning journalist and broadcaster (winning Interviewer of the Year in 2016). The Light Keeper is Moreton’s debut novel. One of my favourite authors, Matt Haig, praised The Light Keeper so I just had to read it. Before we go into my thoughts let’s start with the blurb.

Sarah stands on the brink, arms open wide as if to let the wind carry her away.

Her husband Jack is desperate to find her before it is too late. But Sarah does not want to be found. She’s run away to be alone, to face a moment of truth that will mean life or death.

And there’s someone else seeking answers up here on the high cliffs where the seabirds soar . . . A man known only as the Keeper, living in an old lighthouse right on the cusp of a four hundred foot drop, who is discovering that sometimes love takes you to the edge

As you can tell from the blurb this story line is intense and gripping. However, I would say it is slow to start as there is alot of character development. It is totally worth sticking with the story. As the more you learn about each character the more invested you feel in their outcome.

The story is told from husband and wife, Jack and Sarah’s perspectives. They both have painful upbringings which seeps into their initially perfect relationship. Sarah reaches her crisis point and Jack can’t find her. Jack’s side of the story is fast paced compared to Sarah’s who is slow and controlled. This sharp contrast only increases the suspense in the story.

The ending of this story was deeply thoughtful and poetic. Overall this story would make the perfect Summer evening read. Esspecially if you fancy a change from the light hearted chick lit.

Hopefully I’ve inspired you to give The Light Keeper a read. It will be published by SPCK on the 15th August 2019 and will retail for £16.99.

What books are you reading this summer? I’m always looking for inspiration for my next read!
